FAQ About Braces

What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the prevention, interception and correction of problems in the growing and mature jaws and teeth. It is important to note that orthodontic health care encompasses far more than the "straightening of crooked teeth". Orthodontics effects lip support, chin position, and overall facial appearance.

What is an Orthodontist?
An orthodontic specialist is an individual who earned a full-time dental degree (DMD or DDS) from an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited school. This is followed by an intensive full time orthodontic program of at least 24 months also at an appropriately accredited school. Most orthodontists have also earned a 4-year undergraduate (college/university) degree.

When is it appropriate to visit an orthodontist and who should consider orthodontic health care?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that a child visit an orthodontist by age 7. Growth and development is a critical component to the diagnosis and treatment of children. Some conditions are more appropriately addressed at a young age to take full advantage of growth potential. It is not recommended to wait for the full eruption of the permanent teeth as a guideline for the first visit to an orthodontist.
Orthodontic health care, however, is certainly not limited to children. Millions of adults have benefited from orthodontic treatment. There may be adjustments to appliance design and occasionally minor treatment restrictions for some adult patients; but most of our adult patients are able to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.

Why do some children start treatment at such a young age?
When children are young, the jaws and teeth are much more amenable to change than in older patients. Dr. Spokane often prefers to divide orthodontic treatment into separate phases to take advantage of growth and development. This treatment approach eliminates or greatly reduces the need for extractions or impaction of permanent teeth, extensive treatment, or surgery.

What are the various types of appliances or braces available?
There are many treatment appliances available for use by today's orthodontists. Children often prefer brightly colored retainers or braces with stickers or sparkles suited to their individual personalities. Adults are usually more aesthetic conscience and prefer gold or clear (ceramic) braces. Invisalign is also available for mature teens and adults. Dr. Spokane carefully selects each appliance he uses in order to meet the needs of his patients.

All the retainers come in a wide variety of colors.
