Emergencies

If in discomfort, please feel free to cut or remove any part of your braces, retainers, or wires. We can easily repair them. If a problem arises, it is usually not an emergency unless the patient is uncomfortable. Most difficulties can be addressed by phone during office hours. If necessary, Dr. Spokane or  our clinical assistants can be phoned at (724) 846.9666. Dr. Spokane can be reached after business hours  at (724) 601.3549

Occasionally the following may happen:

Loose Bracket or Band From Tooth

Loose Bracket1. If the patient is comfortable, call during office hours to schedule an appointment.

2. If causing pain, we will see you ASAP to relieve the discomfort.

Broken or Distorted Arch Wire

Broken Arch Wire1. If the patient is comfortable, call during office hours.

2. If it is scratching the cheek or tongue, cover it with wax or a raisin. If the wax doesn't help, try to cut off the part that is sticking out and call the office to schedule an appointment to have it repaired. 3. Sometimes it is possible to bend the wire back into the brace on the molar if it has come out.

Bracket or Appliance (Retainer or Expander) Rubbing Lip or Tongue

1. If nothing is broken, wax will usually be sufficient or use Orabase on the ulcer spot. Always call if you are unsure.

Loose Expander

Stop turning the expander if you are turning it and call the office.

Poking Tie Wire

1. Bend wire back with a pencil eraser. If unsuccessful, cover with wax or a raisin and call for an appointment.
